Chapter 15: ---------- You are never alone:

"Excuse me for interrupting. You youngsters and your raging hormones. You just do not seem to care where you are."

Danny pointed the light toward the sound. It revealed August standing in the outer cell.

"Do you mind my company? I can return at a later date."

"August!" Michelle called out and sprang up to hug him through the bars.

"My dear, you are wrinkling my cassock. Most inappropriate, most inappropriate."

"August, we're just happy to see you." Danny's arms also darted through the bars and then four hands were squeezing August.

"Please stop. This is not the reception I expected," he chided, glad his smile could not be detected in the dim light. "I must say, you two are quite insufferable," he said although not pulling away. "Now curb your emotions and sit down. I have something for you."

They sat down as a padded chair appeared in the cell occupied by August. He handed them a cylindrical object.

"What's this?" Danny asked.

"It is a sanctuary candle."

"A sanctuary candle," Michelle said. "I hope you brought matches."

"No need, my dear, unfortunately, it is electric. It may employ those new light-up diodes. Oh technology, you have invaded all."

Danny felt the on/off switch on the bottom and the simulated flickering candle light filled the room.

"How did you find us, August?" asked Michelle.

"I do have powers beyond that of mortal concept."

"Did you follow me while I followed Nolan?"

"Actually yes," August looked off into space. "Sometimes, genius is found in simplicity. I followed you through all those quick changes of setting. Who could it be that conceived those places? Nolan is much too dumb. It must have been a higher power. The only thing of true interest was poor Herbert, and you left him heartbroken.

"Herbert, who is Herbert?" Michelle demanded to know.

"Yeah, who is Herbert?" Danny chimed in.

"You might consider the text on that foul shirt you are wearing dear boy."

Danny held the candle in front of himself then lifted his head with a look of incomprehension.

"He is the primate that saved you from a dark fate. And you offered little thanks or recognition," August returned with a hint of irritation.

"Wow, Herbert is the gorilla that saved my life. It's good to have friends," Danny reflected and then went on, "And why are you here?"
August looked taken aback. "I am here to commiserate and offer the two of you my support. You ungrateful snot."
"So you are going to spirit us away, just like that. Sounds like a cheesy Greek play, 'Deus Ex Machina'."
"Very good, God from machine. I recall those insufferable productions. It is beyond me how an audience could sit on those cold marble benches before the advent of hemorrhoidal ointment." August looked at Danny as if there was something coming that he should remember. "'Deus in vadit Machina' would be more accurate my boy. God entered the machine."
